The Lovable Farm Animal - Part Two
By Thomas Cummins
Seeing a baby cria within days of its birth is a stimulating birth within oneself of the desire to have these alpacas as part of your daily life. In all things work accomplished with love is a distinct pleasure felt within the heart of your being and has nothing at all to do with the business benefits of being a farmer.
Although farming is a life of its own with 'way of life' more in sync with reality than the normal acceptable terms associated with having and running a business. Yet it is a business that has to turn a profit, just like the foal is to a mare or a calf to a cow the cria is to the alpaca dam and thus the future of your profitable enterprise.
Beginning at the end of the circle is the world of fashion where alpaca fiber has been beautifully converted from raw material to exquisite designs that are cherished all over the world and as far back as the Inca Civilization in Peru many moons ago. Fast forward to today and your cria is suckling and you are wondering how beneficial will this wee baby be to the development of your herd. The answer lies in the breeding program you have adopted and as you know all babies are gorgeous and bring many screams of delight to the world. But, the sincere question is: are you going to make a profit this year with your alpacas?
Actually the real question is: are you going to be able to assist others in the development of their herds with the ongoing breeding program you have initiated? Unlike humans, animals are mostly bred for predetermined results and of course there is always the exception to the rule as a genetic thunderbolt springs out of nowhere and leads the flock by the horns and gallops all the way to the winners enclosure.
The world accepts with great gratitude this wonderful specimen but the day to day workings of a farm cannot be depending on a genetic miracle transported from days gone by and so has to be planned diligently like any business.
Now here is where sensibility has to play a large part in the scheme of things, research the herds you may be looking at and especially the ancestries that may give you the information you need that imply you have a bargain on your hands. Going to larger farms with grandiose auctions where you are generously plied with delicacies and beverages that have inebriating effects which may cloud your vision and empty your wallet, but will not lead you in the path you may want to be heading is true folly and not worthy of a business person of your caliber. Just because you spend many tens of thousands on an alpaca is not a definitive inference of the breeding that will get you towards the business plan you originally put together.
A carpenter measures twice before cutting, so too should you before you cut that check!
So when all is said and done, the luvable alpaca is delightful in itself but for a successful enterprise please do treat it as a business and the areas of pedestals should be reserved for statues and not for placing your luvable farm animal on. As with all businesses with profitability as its main theme go forth with your prepared plan and never darken the highways without it in the back of your mind and the forefront of your actions plus have it as a sidekick to your checkbook.
Go forth live well play well and be well enjoying all things within thy path especially with a sound mind and clear judgment. God bless.
